katsumedia

Media education

For 20 years, katsu.media has been committed to children and teenagers — with hands-on media workshops at schools and youth centres in Berlin and all over Germany.

2005 — How it all begins

It starts while he is still studying, freelancing at a youth club in Rüsselsheim. What began there, Dan Vishnya never gave up: the work with children and teenagers has run without a break ever since — and alongside it, over years of freelance work, what is now katsu.media takes shape. Both come out of the same observation: hand a kid a camera, and they stop being an audience.

“Plötzlich Zukunft” — Kyritz

With the non-profit STATTwerke e.V. he builds a pilot programme for school avoiders at Carl-Diercke-Schule in Kyritz — and in year two the group dares the big one: their own musical. Written, rehearsed and performed over a whole year, until more than 700 people applaud in the biggest hall of town. The project wins the Innovationspreis der Wirtschaft; the radio project “Funkkosmos” takes the Medienkompetenzpreis Brandenburg.

STEM — Robotics

Then come the robots. With the mBot system Dan brings a robotics project week to Carl-Diercke-Schule; with Schnellchecker e.V. he develops STEM formats — robotics, coding, electronics, soldering with a grin.

KfW Stiftung — Schloss Badingen

For KfW Stiftung, children at Schloss Badingen animate their own stop-motion film, frame by frame — miniature worlds, blue screens and tablet rigs between castle walls. The making-of shows how much patience fits into three seconds of film.

Since 2019 — Prevention

In the AntiAnti project by mediale pfade.org, Dan designs prevention workshops that arm teenagers against conspiracy myths, extremism and hate online. For WeTeK’s Medienetage in Treptow-Köpenick, whole school days titled “Always On!” take eighth-graders from their own scrolling habits to the dopamine tricks of their apps — and to building their personal firewall. And through his own agency, the real-world craft of media production flows back into every workshop.

Campus Rütli — The studio

The firm home of this work is the Manege in Berlin-Neukölln, where Dan has run the recording studio since 2012. Out of the sessions grow entire albums — up to 19 “Manege-Hits” per CD, sung and rapped by five-year-olds through to the staff: the “Manege Allstars”.

From the booth to the screen

What starts as a beat in the studio does not stop at the track. The KDS Crew wrote, recorded and then shot their own song — lyrics, hook, camera, edit, all of it theirs. It is the clearest answer to why the music workshops exist: a group that arrives as listeners leaves with a piece of work carrying their name.

Bezirksjugendring Neukölln — Rhythm Hacker

In the “Rhythm Hacker” project for Bezirksjugendring Neukölln, kids build their own fantastic sound machines — soldering, wiring, programming, and finally playing beats on hardware they made themselves. The first generation was built in 2024; in 2025 came “Beatmaschine 2.0” — and on this foundation TAMBUM, katsu.media’s own little beat machine, is taking shape right now.

Today — Ankommen. Mitmachen. Dazugehören.

Since 2025 the project “Ankommen. Mitmachen. Dazugehören” has been running continuously at the Manege for children and teenagers who are new to Germany — many of them from Ukraine. Dan, who came to Germany as a child himself, knows how quickly a camera bridges languages.

“Technical understanding and empathy rarely go hand in hand — in the case of Daniil Vishnya we can confirm both, in the best possible way.”
